Azores
Ponta Delgada to Horta - 14 days of hiking and island hopping on Sao Miguel, Flores Island, Corvo, Terceira, Sao Jorge, and Faial Island. These lush green islands are ideal for walking in late May and early June but high summer humidity can make walking more difficult.
The archipelago is situated in the North Atlantic, almost equal distance from Marrakech in North Africa and St John’s in Newfoundland. The islands are volcanic with the western group sitting on the North American plate and the eastern group located on the African and Eurasian plates. All nine islands have been designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark; important for biodiversity and as a network of international geological interest.
Volcanoes, calderas, lakes, lava fields, fumaroles, hot springs and thermal waters, volcanic caves, "fajãs", fault scarps and marine fossil deposits, among others, are characteristic elements of the Azorean geological heritage.
