At the start of our hike an old Russian military truck was used to get us to the start of our hike and transport our overnight bags to the hacienda where we would sleep under the veranda.
We walked in the Topes de Collantes Nature Reserve and Escambray Mountains for two days with a further day in Cuba’s highest range – Sierra Maestra – where we climbed to La Comandancia de La Plata where Fidel Castro’s former mountain hideaway (complete with kerosene powered fridge) is now open to tourists.
